报告摘要:Our group is interested in studying fluorescent organic molecules. In one branch of our research, fluorophores have been developed as indicators for zinc ions in living cells and tissues. (a) The lack of adequate photostability and (b) the broad emission bandwidths of the majority of zinc-sensitive fluorescent dyes are considered as two of the remaining challenges for meeting the requirements for quantitative imaging of the dynamic distribution of cellular zinc. These two issues limit the utilities of a zinc-sensitive dye in time-course and multi-color imaging experiments. In this presentation a strategy based on intramolecular Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) to reduce the emission bandwidth and to improve the photostability of a zinc-sensitive fluorophore is described.

On the other side of our research on fluorescent molecules, we have begun the development of compounds that afford bright, near-white emission, which could be used in energy-efficient white-light emitting materials. The design principle of the compounds that emit over a large stretch of the visible spectrum in a way is the opposite of that for dyes used in fluorescent microscopy, for which a narrow emission bandwidth is instead preferred. A couple of examples of intramolecular proton transfer dyes capable of multiple emission to produce composite, broad emission frequency coverage will be described in the second, lighter part of the presentation.
